A Helping Hand

March 11, 2013

Established in February 2012 to benefit students from the devastated region of Tohoku, The Peninsula Tokyo Great East Japan Earthquake Hotelier Scholarship is the first and only scholarship offered by a luxury hotel in Japan, providing a full scholarship to the Japan College of Foreign Languages.

On 11th March 2014, The Peninsula Tokyo commemorated the third anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake by beginning the application process to select its second scholarship recipient, which is offered to one student every two years and covers 100 percent of the two-year programme’s entrance fees, tuition, books and dormitory expenses.

First-time scholarship recipient Mizuki Kumagai, aged 17, is a native of Iwaki City in the Fukushima Prefecture. She was among 1,500 freshmen who entered JCFL on 8th April 2013 to begin a two-year academic hotelier programme. During the interview process, she expressed that because of her volunteer work and experiences as a hotel guest, she felt a career in hospitality best suited her desire to help others. She plans to improve her English speaking ability as well as learn French and Korean, so that she can one day fulfil her dreams of becoming a world-class front desk receptionist.
