Cherry Blossom Season in Tokyo
Each spring in Japan, the arrival of cherry blossoms (sakura) is celebrated like no other natural phenomenon in the country. Drawing millions of visitors each year and the subject of many artists and photographers, sakura season is a visual treat, with showers of pink and white flowers decorating riversides, parks and hills.
Japan’s sakura fever begins in early March as eyes start to turn towards the nation’s cherry trees as the delicate flowers slowly unfurl. The spectacular show begins in Kyushu area and is slowly unveiled across the archipelago all the way to the northern tip of Hokkaido.
At The Peninsula Tokyo, guests can get a head start on the season’s merrymaking as hundreds of three-metre high cherry-tree branches grown exclusively for the hotel will adorn The Lobby from 26 March through 2 April. With live music streaming from the balcony above, and seasonal delights like The Peninsula Classic Cherry Blossom Afternoon Tea, it is an opportunity to experience this cherished tradition like never before.
Throughout March and April, the Japanese spring time symbol will also be featured in our special offerings within the hotel. Mixologists at Peter: The Bar shake and stir a collection of original Cherry Blossom Cocktails infused with the delicate fragrance of the flower. To make springtime sakura-watching in Tokyo truly unforgettable, The Peninsula Boutique & Café will offer sakura-themed desserts and treats plus a special hanami picnic box for two.
For those wishing to pamper themselves in the comforts of The Peninsula Spa, The Cherry Blossom Ceremony is a 110-minute rejuvenating full-body treatment, served with a cup of cherry-blossom tea and pink macaron.
Finally, our Concierge recommendations for the best ohanami sites near the hotel are Hibiya Park, Chidorigafuchi and the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, all a brief walk or short drive away. In-house guests can avail of scenic day and night driving tours of Tokyo's best cherry blossom sights via car (by reservation only). In addition, the hotel’s three-wheeled, power-assisted PenCycles are a fun, free, and faster way to enjoy the sights of the city at this most festive and magical time of the cherry blossoms.
